Welcome! I'm John Gayler, a professional photographer based in Campbell, at the heart of the San Francisco South Bay. My lifelong fascination with imagery began with a visceral passion — not just for seeing great photos, but for creating them.
Photography has been my companion since my teenage adventures with analog film cameras, capturing travels both near and far. By 1980, I was working in digital imaging — long before it became commonplace — developing a deep technical connection to digital image data. Over the years, my camera and software have explored everything from satellite imagery and microscopic worlds to portraits, landscapes, and the fast pace of motorsport photography.
In my career, I helped pioneer digital image analysis systems that advanced both science and industry. I collaborated with Nikon to create software that powered laser-scanning 3D confocal microscopes, enabling researchers to visualize the unseen and contributing to hundreds of scientific papers. That technical background continues to influence how I approach equipment selection, lighting, execution, and post-production today.
Outside the lab, photography became both profession and art. Joining the Professional Photographers of America opened new creative frontiers, leading to my PPA Master of Photography degree in 2023 — a recognition that drew together my technical precision and artistic vision. Then, in 2024, I was selected to represent Team USA in the 2025 World Photographic Cup, earning a top 10 place in the Photojournalism category and contributing to Team USA’s championship win — an unforgettable milestone.

My love of cars runs deep, especially for Mercedes-Benz. Since 1999, I’ve driven five different models, each one faithfully serving as both adventure companion and pack horse for my gear. My passion for these machines led to my photographs published in The Star, the Mercedes-Benz Club of America’s print magazine. Whether it’s a functional sports wagon or an elegant coupe, I believe every vehicle tells a story — and deserves to be photographed like fine art.
When not behind the camera, I share my adventures and travel photography through public lectures around the South Bay, encouraging others to explore the world with curiosity and courage — from Iceland’s volcanoes to the canyons of the Colorado River.
In recent years, my creative focus has turned toward light painting — an art form that combines precision science with expressive beauty. This technique involves meticulously layering multiple exposures combining light and detail to produce that "wow" moment I pursue as a photographer.
